Speaking for myself, I find that nauseating. (Please understand that my criticism is not directed at you or anyone else on here.)

Each holiday season, I write letters of complaint and deliver them personally to households that have chosen to make spectacles of themselves by displaying excessive and/or over-the-top Christmas decorations. Actually, I'm trying to convince the Code Enforcement officials in my community to ban anything beyond traditional Christmas trees (which are displayed in the home but can be seen from outside), lighted candles in the windows and, of course, Nativities.

Excessive decoration is a distraction, a hazard and, arguably, a defilement of the true meaning of Christmas.

Thank you.

No offense taken. It's not what I'd spend my time and money on, but I'm a to-each-his-own kinda guy.
I feel the trying to define the "true meaning of Christmas" is a lost cause, since it means different things to different people. I think if the end result is you can believe it's a time to celebrate and spread good will, there is nothing wrong with that. I don't know anything more about this picture than you do, but I have to believe the intent was to put a smile on the faces of others and wasn't meant to be offensive to anyone.

To some people even a simple Christmas tree has nothing to do with the "true meaning of Christmas"....

Haha redneck Christmas sled. That is great. As for the true meaning of Christmas, everyone knows deep down it's the birth of Jesus, but it's still fun to have decorations and stuff, even if most of the traditional decorations don't have much to do with Jesus.

That said a giant nativity set could be very fun.

I'm not convinced that is not Dave behind them there glasses. Didn't notice chains on the tires so there is a chance its someone else.
Won't be long before someone "bumps" Dave's Christmas pics.

I've seen the pic before
I'm not against hunting...or the display of the "trophy"
Not what I would do for Christmas
Only about 30 days before I start setting up for Halloween

As soon as Halloween comes down I will start setup for Christmas
Every year seems I'm still decorating mid-December
So like a lot of big displays I have decided to setup early
Then I can turn the lights on Dec 1st & relax & enjoy

BIG Santa is supposed to arrive this year
Yes...that person is around 5' tall

I am glad that you live far away from Chicago.

I would like to debate you on the topic of self-indulgent, ostentatious and overbearing holiday decorating, but I imagine such an exchange could result in me being banned. Which, of course, I want to avoid.

But, with sincerest respect, let me say this:

I have always wondered if it is by analogy that decorators infer that just because they enjoy festooning their property with all kinds of tasteless, flashy decor that everyone else must enjoy it to the same extent. If so, I would like to say that I am living, breathing proof that it is not the case. (So are the individuals in my neighborhood who are signing my petition, which I will promptly submit to the Code Enforcement officials before Halloween, 2010.)

I decorate for the kids mostly
But I've aways decorated for Christmas
Someone doesn't like it...oh well...doesn't bother me in the least

I brought in a 53' trailer truckful of decorations 2 years in a row
I kept what I needed, sold off most of the rest
Once the garage is finished & floor poured/doors on I'll be bringing in another 53' truck
And will continue to do so as long as there are people who will buy them

Refusing to allow people to decorate for Christmas would involve trampling freedom of religion, freedom of expression
They tried to force someone outside Boston to take down some decorations
Town threatened fines & court....Town lost

We have people who travel to our house every year to see the display
Many people who have large displays see the same people every year
A lot of them have an opening night w/food, hot chocolate etc
I have kids in the neighborhood who have stopped by & ask if I am doing a display this year
....this in years when I do not have lights on/decorations out by Oct 1st or end of November

And quite a few play Santa & hand out candy canes
Among the Christmas group with large display are quite a few whose display are very much religion orientated
Most have nativites...mine is life size...but plastic - lights up
A local person had a nativity that was from mannequins
Robes & outfits to match what would have been worn in that period
A lot of work went into the display

Everyone is entitled to their point of view
I have seen some displays that I do not like
Too many inflatables...stacked right next to each other
I for one think that Christmas has become too commercialized
To me its more about the Spirit of the season
When, hopefully people act a little nicer & people hopefully are happier
But sometimes the rush of the season can have the opposite effect

The ones with big displays are always well known around town. I remember a couple houses in our area, it was pretty much a tradition for us to go drive by and see them every year when I was a kid. I would hate for there to be any kind of law against it, I think it's fun to say the least.

Some decorations can be too much--and if they're on my street, it just draw the shades after dark. No big deal. If there was a display that just went too far, maybe I'd think about signing a petition if there was one being circulated. But, I can't imagine that I would start one myself. As far as drafting personalized letters of complaints and hand-delivering them ... well, I think that's crazy. Sociopathic?

We have a guy in town, somehow he has his Christmas music set up so you can hear it on your car radio, has the station listed out front of his house., Has a great big display. I understand both sides with displays, as for me, can't help looking at them when driving by.

and can someone explain why this thread suddenly went very wide screen.

I actually have the Radio transmitter to broadcast music
I had it setup 1st time last year
This year it will be setup earlier
I broadcast on 101.1fm - ELF Radio

I haven't reached the point where I have the lights dance to music
Maybe once major construction winds down
My lights shut off "early" M-F...10p
Lights on later on the weekend
Then lights/display on late the week of Christmas
Usually no later then 11p
