I-80 Mess...

I-80 through Wyoming and parts of Nebraska has been closed for days due to high winds, whiteout conditions and snow drifts the road crews just can't keep up with.

Thankfully I've only been stuck here for two days and was very lucky to have found a room, others have not been so fortunate. This may have been a news story but with everything else going on this week I'm sure it's is way down the list.

They opened up Westbound travel this morning and this is a webcam picture from just a few minutes ago not far from where I am.

How would you like to be in that mess with hundreds of miles ahead of you?

Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow as Eastbound is still closed and that's the way I'm going.

I-80 Mess...

Emergency fire vehicles were towing zodiaks here in the City yesterday which I had never seen before. The deep tunnel was over capacity so the Chicago River and other creeks and things up the Northshore had to be allowed to drain into Lake Michigan. There were geysers in the middle of streets and the water pressure lifted manhole covers in places. It tried to reach 70 yesterday but was actually snowing (nothing of consequence) today here!

My heart goes out to you. I lived in Cheyenne for a time. There was one trip as a kid where my Mom hung out the window all the way across Nebraska trying to keep the tail lights of the truck ahead of us, guiding the way, in view. We dared not stop.

Just more proof for my old theory that the Midwest is only good for keeping the coasts from crashing into each other.

I hadn't heard about this kwikfishron. Heck, I didn't even hear or see anything about West, Texas today. I drove I-80 through Wyoming and Nebraska last summer and that's a looooooong drive on a good day.

Best of luck to you and I hope you can get back on the road tomorrow.

You're not kidding, I got there just after noon that day and there were No Vacancy signs everywhere. I still went in and asked and after about the fifth try I scored (wasn't cheap either). Later I noticed at least five cars at Walmart that looked like they were being camped in.

I heard 80 was closed before I left and really didn't think much about it since I was two days away and after all it's mid April and I've done this trip many times this time of year.

They finally opened up the Eastbound traffic at 4pm yesterday but I decided to just spend the night again and hopefully miss the madness.

It worked...left at 5 this morning and just got home, the road and traffic were as normal (for the most part) as I could expect.

Home Sweet Home.
