How to refinish steak knives?

I've got a dozen steak knives that are about 20 years old but they are still as sharp as they were on day one.

But through thousands of dishwasher cycles, the wood handles are pretty rough. I've sanded them down and I'm wondering what would be the best finish to put on them.

I have no idea of the type of wood they are. I'm just looking for a finish that will look good and stand up to another 1,000+ dishwasher cycles.

Thanks.

#1, Wood handled knives never should have been put in a dish washer.
If there's no sealer on the handles I use an oil like Tung oil, or mineral oil to reseal them.

Agreed, that wood utensils should be handwashed, but these are inexpensive everyday utensils and not fancy "cutlery", and my lady of the house back then and I just got in the habit of not handwashing them.

I'm actually amazed that the knives have held up so well. They have a stainless steel blade with several different serrations and I've never sharpened them. They were made by Farberware. Good stuff.

Continuing to dishwasher them, a food safe finish is probably a waste of time, but if I must to make me feel an accomplishment, a coating of hot paraffin would be my choice.

H-m-m-m-m...I wonder if paraffin wax would melt in a dishwasher during the wash cycle or the drying cycle? H-m-m-m-m I would have to think about that!

Mineral oil would be a foodsafe product but will not hold up long in the dishwasher. How long does it take to handwash 2 steak knives for you and the wife?

While I'm in the wood preserving mood, sometimes I use my random orbit sander with 150 grit and give the poor old neglected cutting board a fresh look too.

Soak the handles in wipe on Poly---then top with a couple of more coats---

Re apply when they get to needing it---that is about as good as you get on cheap knives----
