How Long Do We Have?

I received this via email today. So I am passing it on as I believe it's worth the read.

Stir the pot a bit, what say?

HOW LONG DO WE HAVE?

This is the most interesting thing I've read in a long time. The sad thing about it, you can see it coming.

I have always heard about this democracy countdown. It is interesting to see it in print. God help us, not that we deserve it.

How Long Do We Have?

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh , had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

'A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.'

'A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.'

'>From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.'

'The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years'

'During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. from bondage to spiritual faith;

2. from spiritual faith to great courage;

3. from courage to liberty;

4. from liberty to abundance;

5. from abundance to complacency;

6. from complacency to apathy;

7. from apathy to dependence;

8. from dependence back into bondage'

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000 Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29

Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: 'In aggregate, the map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare...' Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the 'complacency and apathy' phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the 'governmental dependency' phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called 'illegal' and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message. If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

My $0.02:

I heard it was 500 years.

According to Game Theory (Nalebuff, Dixit. . .) "democracy" is not possible.

And it seems we are already living out the Chinese curse,
"May you live in interesting times."

I must confess I sometimes actually ponder some of the stuff I get in emails.

The last one was dish liquid soap for tick removal. That one I actually tried and it did not work.

My take, we do not have to worry about this scenario that democracy will fail in 200 years. With all of the welfare and governmental agencies, we are turning into a socialistic nation. So I guess we have another 75 years left.

Maybe less than 75. After all the gov bailed out Lehman brothers. Now they are bailing out Fannie May and Freddie Mac.

Some time ago you may remember they bailed out Chrysler.

How Long Do We Have?

What I can't figure out is this:

A year or two ago, everyone was complaining about all the illegals coming into the USA. Everyone said that something has to be done about it.

Now, the Republicans have picked a presidential candidate in John McCain. The Democrats have picked a presidential candidate in Barak Obama. And, from what I understand, Barack Obama has picked Hillary Clinton to be his running mate.

How come, after all the speeches and press coverage, I still don't know where ANY of them stand on the illegal immigrant problem?

This is AMERICA'S election. It is up to everyday AMERICANS to make the illegal immigration issue a political issue in this election if they want anything done about it.

If you guys just go with the flow and don't make it an issue in this election, don't expect that the next President is going to bother doing anything about it.

How is it possible that so many people are fuming mad about illegal immigration before the election, and then they just have to listen to Barack Obama tell them fairy tales about how he imagines American should be great again, and they quite right down. They swallow that hook, line and sinker.

Don't fool yourselves. Don't let anyone feed you a fairy tale about what America MIGHT BE SOMEDAY. Get them to tell you what their positions are on the issues that matter to YOU! NONE of the candidates want to address the sensitive topics because each one of them knows that by speaking out one way or the other on stuff like illegal immigration, they're likely to alienate SOME voters. It's you guys, yes you the voting public that need to make the candidate state their position and make their stance clear. Until you do that, none of them is going to say what their stance is. You can count on them to remain ambiguous on such issues so that they collect every vote they can.

Screw ambiguity. Make them say what they would do about issues like illegal immigration.!

FYI Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac are privately run corporations funded by the US government much like the FHA. Basically, three federal agencies to do the same one job.

I would not be surprised if there is a bail out for GM.

Both Fannie & Freddie are publicly traded companies on the stock exchange. Both were about to fail. Since the failure of these institutions would prove catastropic the government is going to intervene by guarenteeing the mortgages with... You guessed it taxpayer dollars. The more money they print the less the dollar is worth.

Thus rewarding bad loan decisions these companys made at taxpayers expense. Whats more is that homeowners who took on more debt than they could handle will now in many cases be bailed out with save housing programs.

Any time the government interferes with with free markets it is bad.

I agree 100% with this.

I do have strong opinions on this topic and would like to carry this discussion further, but this forum is not the place.

I agreed until I read this book.

This assumes the book's author is impartial and truthful, of course. . .

Not sure where you got that understanding. :confused:

I think they've both made themselves pretty clear. McCain wants to secure the borders to stop the flow of people over the border, and he wants to create a legal status for most of the 10 million illegals who are living and working in the country now.

Obama wants to do . . . well, pretty much the same thing.

You can read more about their positions on this issue by searching the internet for articles, or start here: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/07...y4257426.shtml

How Long Do We Have?

Well, I guess its time for me to stand up on my soap box!

I will NOT discuss the canadates for President, I have strong opinions on this, BUT i will address what I believe is the biggest problem with this country....G R E E D !!!!! It seems that there are so many people out there that never seem to have enough. They will lie, cheat, steal, and compromise every ethic they have ever had to obtain more money. The idiots at the top make more money than they could ever spend in 10 lifetimes, but they want more. The price of health care is so high, the working class can't afford it! The workers of a big corporation make very little compared to the idiots at the top, who rake in the millions and billions. The seperation between those that have, and those that have not is increasing by leaps and bounds. I myself have worked at the same business for over 31 years, and I can't even afford health care. I haven't taken a vacation since 1980! I am not complaining, because I have a job, and also am able to pay my bills (so far).

Its the greedy corporate America thats destroying the working classes way of life. Something has to give. What??? Unfortunately, I do not have the answers, but I, as well as most others here are feeling the squeeze. Will any of the canidates correct this imbalance?

Ooops, sorry about that, didn't mean to go off on a tangent. (I am now stepping down from that soap-box)

Have a good one......Now, I feel much better......

Bofus
