How far would you drive for 1.5 cents?
 
A car maker sent me a flyer announcing that I could win a vehicle in a lottery by showing up at one of their dealerships.

The fine print said this car was worth $30,000 and my chances of winning were 1 in 2,000,000 so this lottery is worth $30,000/2,000,000 = $.015.

Didn't do it.

You have a 1,999,999 in 2,000,000 chance of not even getting the 1.5 cents... :laughing:

I love the flyers our dealers have been sending... they "urgently" need a stock of good used cars like mine (and they would list my car---2000 Chevy Blazer), so please drive in right away, they'll buy it for top dollar and there is no pressure or need for me to buy from them...

Really? there's an "urgent" need for 12 year old Chevy's with close to 180K miles on them???

When I finally did replace it I got the same speech I've received every time I trade--"You know this car is worth less than nothing, it's actually going to COST us money to get rid of it because we have to bring it to auction, we probably won't even get half what we're offering you as a trade value" (which is usually a few hundred bucks).

One of the local dealers mails out car keys. If yours unlocks it, you win. I never try. I did buy a used car from them a year ago because I got a good deal on it.

Plus it's probably a matter of honor that no one leaves a dealership without leaving some of their money. You have to "wet their beak."

BTW, only 7% of the people trust car dealers, less than what trusted Nixon at the end of his presidency.

They are professional liars.

It is their job to maximize profit for the dealership which means force you to pay the maximum possible for the car you buy and receive the least possible for the trade-in.

I can't help but roll my eyes each time I go to the very large Honda dealer in town, with a sprawling facility, free donuts & coffee, balloons everywhere, well dressed salesman, banners, etc... and they give the schpeal about how they are in the business of you being a satisfied customer who will send them more business... you being a "duped" customer is more like it.

The only guy in the area that I believe--and if you're from Eastern Mass you might laugh--is Ernie Boch Jr... their claim to fame for the past several decades has been that they are a family owned chain of dealers and "we have no mortgages on any of our dealerships, so we can sell to you for less and still make the same profit as the other guys"... to me that seems at least possible... having been to their dealerships, they certainly do appear to have less overhead, they have more basic buildings, no perks, no lame customer loyalty crap where they try to rope you into getting all your service there by giving you a "free 1 yr membership in Gold Service Platinum Plus Unlimited" or whatever my Honda dealer calls it... the jokers sent me a coupon for a oil change at $34.99... as though $34.99 was some sort of a GOOD price... this is conventional oil and filter... I know most of the cost is labor, but honestly my Civic takes only 3-1/2 freakin' quarts of oil and has a filter the size of a shot-glass... you'd think they could at least make the coupon $19.99 for shlubs like me.

One word ... shredder.

2 things that are always in our driveway/garage: A Toyota of sorts and a 3-series BMW of sorts. 5th Toyota, 3rd 3-series I think. Over the years I have gotten EVERY imaginable "invite" or "coupon" or "voucher" or "admittance ticket" that you can imagine from both companies. "$1,000 worth of free service" - $4,500 off a new vehicle" etc etc etc Everything gets shredded. The only thing I read is the Komen drive which BMW does, you basically make a donation to Komen and they let you play with a BMW of your choice for a couple of hours.
