House Cleaning Tip

I clean the houses of 30 regular customers for more than 5 years. I have one girl that helps me to clean the houses. During holiday time my customers usually tip me. Do I have to give my helper 50% of the tips that I earn?

If it's your business and she is your employee, I wouldn't say you necessarily have to give exactly 50% - but it's the "nice" thing to do.

As long as she is getting the standard hourly rate to work for you I wouldn't think you are obligated to give her 50%, but some sort of extra compensation/tips always help ensure that employees continue to do great work for you, especially during the holidays

If their a good employee and work hard for you, I would. Once they catch wind your not sharing tips, your gonna turn a good employee into a disgruntal employee. Why risk it when good help is so hard to find. On the other hand if there not a hard worker...keep the tips and look for someone worth sharing them with.

1. Are you receiving the tip because you are the one in charge?

2. Are you receiving the tip because it was your personal work that the client recognized?

3. Does the client sometimes give the tip to your helper instead of to you?

4. Does the client sometime tip both of you?

You will need to know and observe body language to figure out which of the above applies. If it looks like you are receiving the tip just because you are in charge then you should split the tip with your helper.
The good conscientious technician or serviceperson will carry extra oils and lubricants in case the new pump did not come with oil or the oil was accidentally spilled, so the service call can be completed without an extra visit.

Without her help could you maintain your 30 regular customers?

Is your need for a Holiday Bonus greater than hers?

Employers don't get tips, employees do. Think about restaurants, newspaper and pizza delivery people. That said, the house cleaning business is different in that respect; we tip our cleaning person (solo).

Hard feelings will be created at the least, if you don't share the tips. At worst, if/when your relationship ends with your helper, and if you are not reporting your income, then things can get real ugly. Keep your helper happy.

Tips are a gift given by one person to another. They usually are given to the one who did the sweating. So I think the question should be whether your helper must share them with YOU. Did you do half the sweating?
