Honey Bee Crisis

Apparently the orange ladybugs do die off in a few generations. While imported mainly for the nut orchards in Arizona, the bugs became faves of soybean farmers in the Midwest. They really did do a number on the aphid populations.

One harvest season, I bet they were two inches thick around some of my windows. I was extremely sensitive to the bites and would get welts where they bit. Vacuuming worked best.

Yup. They are trying to keep them out of Lake Michigan with electric fences and things but they have made it past the boundaries.

He went on to be one of our worst Presidents but I suffered him first as Governor of California. Ronny got the bright idea that introducing this very species of carp to lakes in California would clean them up cheaper than nailing his buddies for illegally dumping stuff in them. Worked like a charm.

The carp destroyed entire lake ecosystems, wiped out near any other living creatures and then just grew to scifi proportions. Lake Davis is a classic example of managing the carp. They dumped trichlorofloroethylene into it and it killed millions of tons of the Asian carp. It was not fresh chemical either. The solvent is most often used to rinse semiconductor wafers of heavy metals and things. So now, Lake Davis has no fish and impossible concentrations of heavy metals not found in the US. Coincidence say buddies of Ronny that outlived him.

Goldfish are carp. If you have ever had one, you know it will grow to its maximum potential size proportionate to its environment. If these things get into the Great Lakes in substantial numbers? Devastating.

I digress from my own thread though. This bee thing is problematical. Many shopping malls are considering putting hives on rooftops which is not a bad idea. I have seen some hive structures disguised as urban sculpture that look quite nice.

It is not just that pollinated food crops will go up in price if the bees die at the rate they have been. There just will not be any food crops (fruits and nuts come to mind first but it is broader than that). Globally, bees are the major pollinators if what we eat---period and end of discussion. No bees. Less food.

And still just theories as to what factors is confusing the worker bees so they do not return home. Even I have always had the courtesy to return to some grand princess (Queen only in her own mind) to let her know I had had it and would not be back.

Maybe it is cellphone towers and microwave energy output screwing up their navigation. I see so many people oblivious to the World around them here thanks to cell phones. I often wonder if they could find their way home without the GPS capabilities of their phones. Amazes me the women that jog alone in the park before dawn or after dark with music blaring loud enough I can hear it when they pass.

But I do feel technology is the only way to thin First World populations. Ever since my rental car was totaled by a truck a few years ago I realized that electronic devices are the only hope. Some tech savvy idjut that believes we humans really are wired and capable of multi-tasking was playing a video game, in the fast lane, with his forearms while driving. He did admit get distracted and suggesting he must have accidentally tapped the break or accelerator to turn off the cruise control. The truck was navigating a temporary passing maneuver and the guy just dropped from 70 to 45. The rest is history. I did keep the trucker from killing the guy. Nobody, including me, was seriously injured.

But Illinois' no texting while driving law stems from a 17 yo who was downloading ringtones while driving. She took out a promising grad student.

Without these First World technology events, only minority populations without cars and all the electronically devices would be thinned. And we would become inbred idjuts.

Watch, the honey bees will be replaced by flocks of tiny drones. Microscopic drones even. As far the artificial insemination of species. Not a good idea, religion aside, we just do not understand earth science enough to go messing with that. As mentioned above, the bee situation will be solved by Monsanto.

New additional research is out suggesting that contrary to previous thought, fungicides---previously thought harmless to honey bees---may be contributing to hive collapse. One study found 21 different chemicals in bee pollen brought back to hives and from honey bees foraging in fields neighboring sprayed crops, and not from the crops themselves.

This article also said that it took 60 percent of the remaining US bee population to pollinate the California almond crop. No big deal if you do not like almonds? California supplies 80 percent of almonds worldwide and it is an $8B industry.

Please no "Teabilly" reactions for the article being from the Treehugger site. It was actually published in Natural Science.

The problem at Lake Davis was with illegally planted Northern Pike, not Asian Carp. And no, Reagan had nothing to do with it.

I want to think that your comment calling one of the greatest presidents we have ever had as one of the worst was meant as sarcasm.....

But...based on your claims about Carp in California....unless you can post some references....total BS.

I know, this is the internet and it has to be true....

But in the interest of being a bit more factual instead of just pulling something out of the proverbial posterior, here is a link to the history of Carp in the US....there is no mention of California, much less Reagan. In fact, I spent way too much time trying to find some related info.....NOTHING.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_carp

Cliff note version...the present Carp issue was caused the the Mississippi floods over running the ponds that had carp in them.

Saying Reagan was the cause the the Carp being used in CA is about par to saying bathing suit designers cause skin cancer.

As usual, they can't report the news accurately....and forget about minor events in history....

Funny how no one mentioned the cold war.....the fall of the Berlin wall....

Or about the fact that our President can't create laws...he can only sign or reject those laws put in front of him by our congress. So all of a sudden, those laws created by congress are his fault?

Here is a bit more 'balanced' view...

There is an individual who made world headlines because he was alleged to have been caught on videotape smoking something in a crack pipe..

This man is about 300 pounds overweight, and so the running joke in Toronto is that maybe there were cheeseburgers in that pipe.

This man may or not may not be the mayor of Toronto.

I posted a joking comment about the incident and got my hand slapped, my post deleted and a very stern warning not to do it again. Since I was posting about cheeseburgers...I am to assume we are not allowed to discuss them

Look, I let this get derailed and posted political stuff (before the ban) and admit I got the species of invasive fish wrong. Lake Davis was not taken over by carp but by pike.

My post was about bee colonies failing and not one of them buzzes about and cares about politics.

If one of every four things we eat comes from bees polinating though, it does not really matter what your political party is does it? Right or wrong, if the bees stop buzzing and doing their thing? A quarter of what we eat just goes away?

Fine for us that can walk a block and point at stuff we want to eat today. Not so great for those who depend on bees, and what they polinate, for an ag sort of income.

The biggest threat is the Great Lakes. Ottawa is dumping a huge 17 million pile of cash in the effort to stop them from crossing the Detroit/ Windsor border.

And the Bees... Without them buckwheat won't be pollinated (which sounds a lot like wheat for flour) Without flour, no cheeseburger buns. No buns, no cheeseburgers.

All of this will equal a very grumpy and grouchy certain individual, who is 300 pounds overweight and may or may not have been caught smoking something resembling a crackpipe.

Watch out Marg Delahunty

Seriously People..

Steven's message is a very real concern. We must all be proactive. Eliminate the unnecessary use of pesticides and weed control poisons. Look to us Canadians for guidance if need be.

We are more then grateful that the waters run from north to south. If only we could keep the acid clouds from travelling this way...hmm..
