From the "Hi, I'm really stupid" dept at your local GM dealer...

Can a GM dealer refuse to do warranty work on a vehicle not purchased there?

In any case... I don't think it's a good idea to leave a message on a voicemail, stating that you won't do warranty work as an explicit threat to a perspective buyer considering purchasing a car from another dealer:

There going to get paid back from GM the same amount if you bought the car there or not. It would be stupid of them to refuse.
May want to get your manual out and look up the factory reps, phone # and try giving them a call.

What a shame. This salesrep sounds a little desperate for biz. When I walk into my local GM dealership they practically carry me around.

Considering the tax dollars you loaned them, they should carry you around in a golden chariot!!!

At least Ford was smart enough to avoid the "bailout", but they probably expected to pay back everything and were not put under government management and design scrutiny. They just sold Jaguar and Rover to an huge Indian company (TATA) for something like $40,000,000,000 in cash. That company could have also bought GM, but they avoid selling any products in the U.S. they also have a new fine, compact 4 door sedan with AC that they sell for $2800, but will not sell it outside of SE Asia since they have sold what they planned to produce annually.

A local Dodge dealer tried that with a friend, he had bought a used truck privately and took it to them for service to get a few things fixed before the warranty expired. The did a couple warranty repairs/recalls then suddenly refused to do any more work on it because he didn't buy it there. He called Dodge, they put him on hold and called the dealership to speak with the puke that is the so called service manager.

They went back and forth speaking to my friend, then the service manager separately several times. After a few minutes the lady came back on the phone and said the dealership would be more than happy to set up an appointment to get his service performed, but he might want to wait a little while for the service manager to cool down. He then told her he was pretty sure he would never set foot in the place again and had owned his last vehicle from them. The funny thing was that he had actually bought a brand new car from that dealership just a year or so before this happened, the car was still under warranty!

True to his word, the truck was fixed at a dealer in another town and he traded it off for a Ford soon after. He has since bought 3 new Ford trucks from the local Ford dealer, all 3 were crew cab diesels with all the toys, the last one had a sticker of over $60,000! The dealerships moment of stupidity cost them a whole lot more than it gained them.

The sales department has nothing to do with the service department. Service is where they make all the money, not the sale. It's not like they don't get paid for warranty work. That is a desperate salesman.

When I bought my current vehicle I negotiated 1/2 dozen oil changes and an after factory back up sensor to be installed.
Its actually at the dealers right now getting some warranty repairs done. I told them (Nicely, cuz you catch more flys with honey than vinegar) I expect the vehicle to be detailed when I pick it up. We will see

IIRC the Washington Consumer's Checkbook has never given a dealership a check mark both for price and for quality. I avoid them like the plague.

Of course, when I get a safety recall notice I am on the horns of a dilemma.

I've had a bad taste in my mouth ever since GM started singing their "we're the #1 automaker in the world again, all it took was $5 billion of government money and a tsunami to destroy Toyota's infastructure" song.

It didn't help to read about how they are refusing to do warranty work on Malibu's because "that was the old GM that made those cars" not the reorganized one.

Shady business - all around. I have a BMW a Toyota and Pre-Ford Volvo parked in my driveway, but If I ever need to buy domestic I'll stick with Ford.
