Just after tonight's (10/6/09) play-off/play-in division championship game for the Minnesota Twins there was a commercial by Hillerich & Bradsby (sp?) for the last commemerative bat ($100 or so) for the last major league baseball game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
The bat shown on the commercial had a date of 10/04/09 on it, which was the last regularly scheduled game. Unfortunately, the Twins won tonight on 10/06/09 (the night after the Viking Green Bay football game the night before). The next scheduled home game in the Metrodome will be the Twins against the Yankees on 10/08/09 (and following) or so in the AL championship game series.
It is ironic that the lights for the new stadium are on for 100 hours to break them in for next year and show off the Colorado grown grass/sod grown using soil trucked to CO last winter. The new field will handle about 2" of rain in 1 hour and be playable in 20 minutes.
Can you imagine the problem for the person that put the wrong date on the commemorative bat too soon? How about the inventory and the cost of the TV commercials that were already committed to? Maybe someone will find a way to re-brand the bats as collector items.
They may be able to sell the rejects to some of the 54,000 people that were at the Twins game.
Could be worse, at least they didn't proclaim Dewey Wins.
They can always be used as firewood.
Unless the bats were made in China and are coated with lead-based paint. (But I think they only use that kind of paint on children's toys.)
