A Dog's Tale.
Came home from work at about 2:30 in the afternoon yesterday, opened the back patio door and found my roommate's 16 year old mutt, dead. Heat stroke, I'd imagine.
Took the lifeless body to the Houston SPCA to be buried and just as I was about to leave, three very early teenage girls come in with a young Black Labrador Retriever, sniffing and crying, all teary eyed. I asked the employees what the dog's chances of first passing the temperament test were to which they said 50/50. Very sweet young dog, all wiggles. But if she didn't pass their test she'd be put down immediately. Then I asked about the health tests and if she didn't pass would they at least inform the people who dropped her off. The girls said they have never taken the dog to the vet, she's had no shots and has not been fixed. And the answer to my question? Nope, euthanized on the spot. If all tests were passed how long would they allow a dog to be on the adoption floor? Three days and guess what they then do to the dog? Yup. Meet my new girl Sadie, who now with certainty will live a long and happy, full life. http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...816_190134.jpg http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...817_074600.jpg http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...817_072525.jpg |
thats a fine looking dog.
fortunately here, the humane society will treat animals that need treating and work to get animals through behavior mdification program if they are agressive. only failing the behavior modification or being medically untreatable and/or in pain, will they euthanize. |
I called a few other no kill shelters but all were filled, no cages available. If I were to simply leave her on their steps they'd have no choice but to, well, you know.
Sucks, so many good dogs out there, so many negligent dog owners as well. Sadies got her first veterinarian appointment to test for heart warms, get fixed and have all of her shots the 28th of this month. |
Welcome home lucky Sadie.

And now Little Miss Sadie knows to sit, shake and from wherever she is in the house to go to her kennel. One word, "Kennel". She's learned all this in just three days. And she's the sweetest little darling, so damn cute it's ridiculous. Bounces around like a rabbit! |
