I love the Newfie accent.

I have to think about how us Torontonians say the word boat or out. Sounds normal when I say it

I have a friend from Toronto--His family hails from Newfoundland--

It's a stitch when he mimics the accent---complete with gestures and face expressions--

My grandmother on my fathers side was from Kingston Ontario---that side of the family fled this country with the rest of the loyalists after Zebadiah Houson was killed in the battle of Bunker Hill in 1770 something.

She never talked funny---although she did say a lot of funny things. " Oh, Charles,I can't be out of money--look at how many checks are left in the book!"

"DIY" - cooking/baking - story

When I was in college (late 60's - 70's) -
Southern Ill. Univ. had a large enrollment - 40 to 45 thousand.
There were people there from all over the US and the world.
Lots of different accents.
I took a class in "Dialectics".
There were 40 to 50 people in the class (fairly, large).

The first day of the class the professor went one-by-one through everyone
in the class; and had us pronounce several words.
He pretty much "pegged" everyone; regarding what state they were from -
What part of a major city they were from -
What country they were from.

Even those of us from Northern Ill. -
Whether we were from Chicago (And, what part of Chicago) or -
the suburbs.
People from Southern states - what state they were from.
It was very, interesting!

I had friends from Southern Ill. and various, Southern states.
They all had a Southern "drawl" - to me, that was just that.
(I was more interested in the meaning behind their words - not,
how they pronounced them!)
After that class -
I could see (and, hear) distinct differences!
It was "cool"!

That's when I picked up my "Southern drawl"! -
on a "good day" - I can still, "switch" right into it!
Ain't language fun!!??

Dear Rossi, Our resident computer whiz,

You know when you're watching a vid whether its youtube or a news feed or sympatico or whatever, how it keeps stalling and starting? Whats with that? Do you have any idea how one would prevent that?

Thanks pal,
Jan

Actually, My Grandmother was born and raised in Wisconsin. Her roots go back to the Mayflower. My Grandfather and his parents were born in Canada. Before that I believe it was Scotland.

The other set of Grandparents were from the UK as well[/quote]

My kinfolks came from Ireland and settled down around Atlanta somewhere. From there, who knows, I do know I have Cherokee Indian, French and English blood also, kinda Hines 57.

Judy and I love to laugh and sometimes I might get a little silly but old folks do stuff like that sometimes.

Rossi, when it comes to words, I think Judy wrote the book, she is amazing with English and words and stuff, it is hard for her to keep this ole hill billy in line sometimes. (she was an executive secretary)

Old sayings become old sayings for a reason

How's this for young and innocent;

Last year, my son, whose name coincidentally is Michael, was in grade 2. His teacher, although very good at her job, was rather the prissy sort, Maybe better suited at a school in the city....all girls would be best. Anyway, he is good natured soul, a kind kid, but very busy.

So Michael comes home from school one day "Mom my teacher really really likes me alot" he says in all seriousness. " Why Mike what happened?"

"She put me in a desk all by myself right beside hers"

I didn't have the heart to crush him

Jan -
Sometimes we have the same problem.
It depends on a number of things.
First of all - how you connect to the Internet.
"Dial-up" - slow
Some types of "wireless" - faster
"Cable" - very, fast.

Also, depends on the speed of your computer -
memory speed (and, how much you have) -
processor speed -
how fast the "Bus" speed is, on your motherboard -
how many things you have running in the "background" -
(I just looked at a friend's computer - they had over, 30 things
running at "start-up" - way too, many!)
Depends on the day, and time of day - Sat. - Sun. - lots of Internet
traffic.
Week-day 2 - 3 in the morning - not so much "traffic".
How "fast"/"hot" your video-card is (how much memory).
How your "virtual memory" is configured.
Lots of factors!

(By the way - I'm not a "computer whiz"! - I just know some stuff!)

"Rossi" - your friend in "computer", "HELLO"!

Thanks Rossi,
Meh,

My head is spinning
I'll have to deal with it later. A friend just popped by, very briefly. In fact she didn't even come in. She does daycare in the neighbourhood and wanted to tell me scarlet fever is going around.
Great..Young Michael is showing signs. High fever yesterday and a few others. we are off to the walk in clinic now
He is very ornery right now, cuz he figured he should be allowed to go play seeing its march break

K its all good. Took a throat swap, we will see in a day or two. No thanks to my alarmist friend. Then again it is in his classroom.

I'm gonna let him go out and play. Maybe even taekwondo class later. Lots of hand washing

Thanks for your concern Rossi.

And for all those skeptics...20 road min trip to the Dr. both ways. A stop at the public library. Back home in just over an hour. So much for long wait times
