Dam Beavers

Across the street from my house is a 35 acre lake. Under the road is a culvert that connects the lake to the middle of my two acres. The result is a tiny creek roughly 3' wide and maybe 18" deep that rises and falls with rain and drought. A couple years ago I noticed that a bunch of trees were dying and when I investigated I found that some beavers dammed the creek. It has to be the lamest dam creek to dam, but I guess they hear water flowing and they just can't help them-dam-selves. After I got rid of the dam beavers the first time (which the State did for me free of charge) I decided to get rid of the 300 bricks that I had left over from building the house in 07 and I threw them in the creek. A few weeks ago I noticed that the creek was up a little bit and I discovered that the dam beavers were back. Turns out the beavers used the some of the dam bricks in the construction of the dam (you have to look carefully to see them in the pics). I took a while to bust up the dam (a mini excavator would have been dam handy) and the beaver patched it at night, but after week I won the battle – at least for now. I imagine when it rains the creek will be up a little and flowing into the lake, and the beavers will be back. However, they’ll have to swim through the dam trap that DNR set and that will be the last dam thing that they do. I hate beavers.

A week ago I went down to the creek to check on things and found a big moccasin floating in the creek. For fun I added a picture of a copperhead that came up in my garage last year while I was welding some ornamental iron (I posted this same pic some time ago in another thread). I walked right past him before realizing he we there.

What did the beavers say when they woke up to water flowing?

Dam it!

Dam Beavers

Is the State going to clean up the bricks you dumped in the creek for free too?

No. They are simply rocks and they will stay in place.

Dam Beavers

Beavers are super destructive when they run amok. My understanding is that once they start somewhere, so long as there is running water and beavers are in the area they're going to dam it. I'm glad the State helped you out.

Time for a fur coat? Hat?

Some eat the tail. The only thing to do with a beaver is kill it. The are one hell of a nuisance. I tried waiting for it one night with my shotgun, but after an hour I lost interest. The traps will get em

Just cause you CAN do something doesn't mean you should, or would want to.
Our neighbor killed a beaver that was damming our pond. They cooked it just for the heck of it. They let DH try it.

He said it tasted like it was made by B.F. Goodrich.
