Calls from 473 area code number - scam

If you see a call on your caller ID with a '473' area code, don't answer and if you do, don't call the number back.

Here's an article about it...

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014...-answering-it/

The article says there is a similar scam from the '809' area code.

I've been getting a call with a 971 area code for a few days in a row and when I answered it the first few times there's nobody there and they hang up..... annoying.

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

Barb, if we don't know who it is we don't answer the phone, there are just too many idiots out there wanting to rip folks off or sell something. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't answer unknowns either. If someone needs me, they'll leave a voicemail. If the voicemail doesn't come or is unintelligible, I usually Google search the number. Seems to work pretty well, and is easy to do with a smartphone.

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

There are several area codes that come up from scam calls that don't actually exist.

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

I have been getting that 971 area code for years. Real shame in this country that they can not go after these people. That do not call list is a total joke. If you have a landline all you really get is doctors appoint reminders and telemarketers. My landline phone only call blocks 30 numbers at a time. If I could find a phone that blocked 100 number I would run and buy it

It's also a shame that the 'do not call' law doesn't include political ads.

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

Rachel called me yesterday offering to lower the rate to zero on both mastercard and visa.
I pushed 1 for yes. When she came on the line I was going to insist on the zero rate even if I had to speak to management.

When she started to speak I asked her how come she hadn't asked for my card #'s and did she want my social insurance number.
Rachel hung up on me

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

I talked to the Mo Atty General office about the scam calls. He said those people are so good, they can make any number come up on your caller ID. I know that one of my neighbors number came up on the ID a couple times and it was a company selling a security system. They had talked to her and started using her number.

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

I've been getting calls from "card services" again, but now the caller ID shows a number with the same area code I have and the next 3 numbers are the same as mine. The last four digits are different, of course, but I wonder how they get a local phone number to call from.

Here's a funny telemarketer video on youtube.

When I do get a number that keeps calling over and over I'll pick up the phone and act like a half deaf 90 year old. I yell "what, what?" Then "can't hear you, gotta talk louder". So I get them yelling into the phone and embarrassing themselves in front of their coworkers.

Barb
Their computer system allows any number they want to use to show on caller ID. That is why they are so hard to catch.

Calls from 473 area code number - scam

It's called caller ID spoofing.

I've been getting about 1-2 calls like that a week. One of them is the card services...the other is to sell carpet cleaning.

What sucks is that even though we have the DNC list....the guberment does nothing about the violations. I'll be writing my congress person on that shortly.

But I do have a plan...

The next time I get a call for the carpet cleaning....I'm going to set up an appointment for the house 2 houses from me....it's basically unoccupied....when they show up...I'll record them....and then file a lawsuit against them for violation of the DNC. I might even invite one of the local news crews along.

edit....interesting....the DNC (Do Not Call registry) shares the same initials with another organization that is all talk and no action.....hmmmmmm
