Is this a bullet?
 

I was cleaning my gutters today when I saw this stuck in my shingles like a dart. There is a hole in that shingle where this was so I'm hoping its not deep enough to cause a leak. What do you think?

Definitely a bullet. Possibly from a black powder rifle.

How the hell did it end up stuck into my roof? That's a little scary to think that my daughter could have been outside and had the bullet hit her instead. I live in a neighborhood with houses all around me and there's a farm behind my house. The bullet was at an angle as if it came from the front of the house.

Who knows, it could have been there for years.

Probably should report it though. Although not likely, it could be connected to something. You never know.

I think there's a shooting range not to far away or maybe just target practice somewhere in someone's back yard. I hear shots pretty often during the summer. But that's more toward the back of the house towards the west and the bullet was at the east side angled toward the back. It's just strange and scary at the same time. I have cleaned the gutters before and have not noticed it so I assume its been there less than a year.

That large, I have to agree that it's black powder. That being said, it's range is severely limited so I'd wonder about the neighbors or what's going on at the farm.

I tend to agree. The bullet looks like it was not traveling at too great a velocity or it would likely have embedded deeper in the shingle and would be more mashed up.

It think you should report it just for peace of mind. It was probably somebody shooting crows or something and not thinking much about what else was in the general direction of the bullet.

I've had a couple instances in my life when I needed a gun for the job---two very different jobs. I was well trained in use of them. Most gun owners are not and do not need to be. And they encourage their offspring in similar habits with lack of knowledge.

I would not be paranoid but would mention where you found the bullet to the authorities. Unlikely they will, or can, do much about it but at least you and the type of bullet go on record in case something more serious were to happen. My guess since the bullet was in your roof is someone was shooting birds or some other tree or roof animal and not thinking about what else was within range and in the same general direction. Maybe 22 cans into a case?

That is NOT a black powder round.....looks more like a 38 cal......maybe 9mm

This is a good example of why shooting a gun into the air is against the law....your lucky it hit your roof and not something more important.....like the head of one of your kids.

I'm a strong 2nd Amendment supporter.....but not a 'stupidity' supporter....

Agreed, most black powder rifles are .45 to .50, and most bullets for them are sabots (the lead/copper is surrounded by a plastic sleeve) so the rifling never leaves marks in the lead. That looks more like a .38 to me also.

It is very stupid firing any gun besides a shotgun with birdshot into the air. Last winter here in Ohio a hunter discharged his muzzleloader into the air after a hunt. The bullet his an Amish girl a few hundred yards away in killed her. Sad story because of unnecessary stupidity.
