Anyone been to Belize?

DH and I are finally getting some vacation in March and are thinking about going to Belize. Thoughts? I am not really interested in hearing from any Debbie Downers, OK? Tell me about your great time in Belize.

Funny you should bring this country up, I had just told a friend that I wanted to retire to a suitable climate that was cheap to live in and he replied back that he would choose Belize. I have never been to there but traveled quite a bit to South America for my job and though it was fun the busy areas can be daunting. I usually worked in the smaller towns and found the people there were so much more accommodating and friendly (ie happy to see you) then the larger tourist traps. I must impress upon you that staying inside the tourist boundaries are in you best interests, do not and I repeat do not take a taxi or site seeing tour unless they come highly recommended from the hotel concierge.

Also if your are staying in a little out of the way place take an Imodium AD tablet every morning without fail regardless of showing symptoms, it is too late when they do show. A Debbie Downer it may be but remember our internal constitution is not that strong after eating decades of bleached flour and chlorinated water.

Have fun and post pictures - are you taking the chickens? if so they will fit right in.

We considered Belize for our honeymoon and it does look beautiful! I'm a SCUBA diver so it was near the top of my list of place to go. Call me a Debbie Downer but I read that it isn't one of those places where you want to rent a car and go on a drive to who knows where...Lots of kidnappings and shady folks running around apparently. Back in '07 when we were considering it the US gov't had some travel advisories that convinced us to decide against it.

In hindsight, I would have taken my chances in Belize. We ended up going to Tahiti and Moorea (which was incredible) and I'm still paying it off nearly two years later.

I've been there a couple times. The last was '04, great vacation.
On the first trip we landed in Belize City and immediately started driving west to San Ignacio to see some ruins and did some cave tubing. We then drove to Hopkins for a night and went to Jaguar state park to take pictures and went river tubing.
We continued to Placentia and did some diving. Placentia is a cool town but seedy people. I have mixed feelings because we were burgled there, lost my video camera and a few bucks. Police were no help; we were just a couple of gringos that will leave soon. The diving was very good, however.
On a follow-up trip to Belize, we went to Anbergris Caye for a long weekend to go scuba diving. They drive golf “cars” around there. The diving was just OK, not as good as everyone seems to talk about. There are much better places to go diving.

Kctermite - funny you should say Tahiti b/c that's the other destination we were considering. Seems like we can spend alot less money and have vacation again later this year with Belize.

No SCUBA for me :( I take blood thinners now - so I'm stuck on the surface - but that's ok b/c I love to snorkel.

Tahiti and the rest of French Polynesia is disgustingly expensive. The average meal is upwards of $75 for a couple, mixed drinks are about $14, cokes are $4. Crazy expensive! Tahiti is ok and the city Papeete is interesting, but I would go straight to Moorea or Bora Bora instead of spending any time there. We did two days in Tahiti and after seeing Moorea we regretted seeing any more of Tahiti than the airport.

Even with no diving, the snorkeling is spectacular. If you change your mind on going there get ahold of me and I'll talk to you about it.

We are spending our first week on Caye Caulker, Our second week on a private island off Glover's Atoll, and the third week between the Cayo district and Punta Gorda.

March 6 - Here I come!

Have fun.

In less than five days I will be on a beach on Caye Caulker. One week there, then a week on Isla Marisol, and then one week touring the mainland. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Is that a 3 week vacation or is there some business involved?
Are you planning on going into Guatemala to visit Tikal?

Man, I am sooo jealous. It is snowing here right now.

we're supposed to be on a plane in 12 hours. DH just discovered that he forgot - he lost his passport six months ago. :furious::furious::furious::furious::furious::furi ous::furious::furious::furious::furious::furious:: furious:

So we're off to the nation's capitol so he can get one - and the airline was happy to put us on a flight 24 hours later for a fee.

EXPLETIVE DELETED !!!

If nothing else goes wrong, we've only lost a day. Hopefully we'll be on a plane in 7 hours.

Home again, home again, Jiggidy, Jig

20 days in a tropical paradise: priceless. Sadly, no one took it upon themselves to finish any of my DIY while I was gone.

Here's a pic of Tikal, the one day we went to Guatamala.
