Any Hockey Fans?

I have been a hockey fan for 50 years, but the "butcher", dumb hockey now in the NHL has ruined generations for the future. The little rinks and rules in the corners just make it worse.

Even some Europeans get sucked into it. It is getting close to the old Russian Red Army teams of many years ago.

My grandkids do not want to be in a dumb (goon) sport and take to other sports. Herbie Brooks (Player, NHL coach, and coach of the miracle team in 1980) would agree toady if he was still around.

Speaking of rough- what other sport penalizes you 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking a dive? Soccer should check into that rule

Next time a hockey player blocks a 100mph shot with his face they should just "mace him" with that magic boo-boo spray they use in soccer!

As with any sport, or activity, you have those that like it and those that don't.

Take me....I have not watched a sports game on tv in maybe 5 years.....I'm sure the fact that I built a garage first and now I'm doing a 2-story addition has something to do with that....those nails are not going to put themselves in the wall if my ass is parked on the couch.

Take Los Angeles......we don't have a football team....but the Kings are the current holders of the Stanley cup...and the Ducks have come close. I have not been to a Kings game since they moved from the Forum....but when there were there....oh baby....good times. Between a usually great game, hot babes in the stands and an outstanding roast beef sandwich with a couple of cold beers....great fun.

LA also has 2 basketball teams. I have never been to a Laker or Clipper game....but I'm sure the babes are just as hot....not worth watching on TV because the camera always watches the game and not the crowd.

The bottom line.....to each his own.

On another forum, when the above similar question comes up....I usually say "Shouldn't you be in the garage?" Some don't get the sense of humor....though, I'm sure the likes of Creeper and Doc would get it....

So...don't get your knickers in a twist.....if you like Hockey....comment...if not....go to the garage....

I think the garage comment brings up another point about hockey - the non-stop of it. The 2 primary U.S. sports (Football and Baseball) have a lot of breaks in the action. Time between plays or pitches to be doing something else. We (people) often pair those sports with doing something else. Be it socializing at the bar, working on something, making trips to bathroom/beer-fridge. Working in the garage and casually watching the Cubs game was a favorite thing of mine (once upon a time before kids, when I could afford to spend time doing things like "working" in the garage). Watch 5 seconds of a pitch, do something for another 30 seconds, look up again, etc.

With Hockey, Soccer, and even Basketball, the play is nearly non-stop. This requires dedicated focus to watch the game in its entirety and not miss something. For those fans who are primarily interested in the stop-start sports, this can be a bit overwhelming. Maybe it even leads to the thinking that not as much scoring happens in NHL vs. NFL - since a lot of time ticks off the clock in the NFL with men in the huddle or casually strolling back to the line of scrimmage. There is probably more "Playing time" happening in NHL/MLS/NBA than NFL or MLB.

Fan here, but the Wild were done once we got the Blackhawks.
I do not have cable or such, so I follow everything on the web. I'd say Chicago has a chance. I'd like to see Detroit, only 'cause it pisses off a friend of mine

How oh how does that ever even happen??

Never in the history of the cup has a upset been so profound, although admittantly with the leafs history of the last decade, I have been a bit of a bandwagon fan.

Just as a matter of loyalty only, my wish is for Ottawa to keep the cup on Canadian soil...where it belongs...

Any Hockey Fans?

About 15-20 years ago, I was at a Toronto Leafs game with two friends and their father (a NHL All-star and legend locally). As we nursed our drinks (served in a real glass with ice) the father talked about the changes in hockey and did not like the direction it was going. He said it was turning over to the goons with little skill other than drawing blood and attracting attention.

It turned out that he was at the same game as I was at 20 years earlier than then when his sons played for St. Marys on a trip to MN.

I think one of the 2 games they played in, was against a high school the Herbie Brooks (or his younger brother) played for before the Olympics and coaching the Rangers.

My 3 brothers and father were hockey nuts.. The game was drilled into my blood since birth. My eldest brother played for the Toronto Marlboros in '73, with the Howe brothers and Bruce Boudreau. They won the memorial cup that year.

Its was pretty cool as a kid when he would bring these guys home. He was later drafted onto the Islanders farm team, but his career ended there, He made it that far out of sheer determination and excellent skating abilities. He was fast but not a big guy and so not much of a fighter.

He actually took up boxing on the side to become better and won the lightweight champ for Ontario one year

Gold seats at the gardens were always avaliable for free
