The Africans

My father was an artist and a dreamer.

In 1964 he lost his job as a store display man and store designer----

He made a decision that many people do when over 40 and out of work--

He bought a store and became an entrepreneur.

My dad knew the clothing business well---I'd been to some fashion shows where the models smiled so sweetly at a youngster like me---and visited Vincent Lippe--the people who made all the animated figures for the State Street Christmas windows.

All this didn't prepare my dad well for the shop that he bought---

You see, he couldn't afford a clothing store----so he bought a German deli---

It was a hopping little place in those days---German was the language of choice and even though we were of English and Welsh stock the customers accepted that ---All the staff were German.

I don't know if any of you have ever dealt with the artistic thinker, but they do think differently than the average person----this led to some interesting developments....

My father ,soon enough, had spiffed up the place with new shelves, lights and all those good things--

Artist create---but seldom manage things well---always looking out the window and dreaming of a new and interesting challenge----and so started the gift shop------

Naturally, the first items were beer steins and music boxes----and amazing Christmas items from Germany,Austria and Switzerland---

My mother was like Jimmy Stewart in 'it's a wonderful life'----Her lifes dream was to be an archeologist

Traveling to the most exotic and remote corners of the world--digging up hand made treasures from lost civilizations and filling museums.

But world war II got in the way---then a family--and teaching---so she kind of liked that side of the business-----

We opened up a separate shop next to the original a few years later---and that became the duty of my brother and myself to attend---With frequent visits from Maureen--another high school helper who had a crush on both of us----

But Maureen and her friends will be left to you imaginations---that part of my life is best left in my memories----

Are you back from work yet? Your customers called and said you can work on their houses another day.... after you've finished telling this story.
