Hi all. I'm a late 30s desk-job type in the Georgian Bay area of Ontario, Canada. I'm also a firefighter at my local rural firehall (we're all volunteer/on-call).

Bought a mid-70s vintage house around 2003 and have been living with it ever since. Many of our challenges are the result of poor maintenance of the previous owners, but also complications as a result of a electric baseboard to forced air gas retrofit a few years before we bought the house. The roof is a modified a-frame to which the original builder (for some reason) attached a garage on one side and a big (extra bedroom) dormer on the other side. This has managed to kill most of the snow advantages of an a-frame quite nicely, creating huge valleys that almost-inevitably ice-dam and require massive gutters to accomodate heavy rain.

Most recently I've been renovating the unfinished basement in accordance with the eco-energy program (new walls including foam board, roxul, new studs and new electrical). THis spring I have to dig up two areas of my foundation that have moisture issues. In the next couple years I'll be replacing the (really bad) deck, improving my attic insulation, and sorting out the siding. Where I can, I'll do myself. Where I can't (and I can afford it) I will hire local contractors.

Regarding my DIY work ethic, I'm willing to try almost anything that can be done safely and properly by a solitary person (I'm a work alone guy) without taking a ton of time off work. I've redone my wiring in the basement myself as it is all installing in exposed new studs, but for complex work my buddy the electrician gets called. As for plumbing, I started off confident I could do it myself, but I have found a local plumber (husband of a colleague) who is honest, reliable, competent and has excellent attention to detail, so I've almost completely sworn off doing my own plumbing.
