rather than have to build the windows and door openings out--why not strip the steel siding off and scrap it for some $$. this way you start with a clean slate. maybe add some insulation or house wrap before the vinyl

In my opinion this would be a better way to go.

Why replacing the steel? Paint faded, bad color or dinged up? Steel siding can be repainted if it is just a color reason.
