Tired of paying people to do a bad job

Hi everyone

I am in the midst of doing a major bathroom remodel. Everything from replacing subfloor, new plumbing, bathtub, etc etc etc.

I paid a plumber to come out to look at a toilet flange problem (too high with new lower subfloor). He recip sawed off the old pipe and fitted with a rubber no hub 3 inch coupling. He then charged 225. I thought to myself that I could have easily have done that for 25 bucks.

Probably could have. $10 for the part, $215 driving to your house and knowing how to install it properly

What do you mean by bad job?

$215 for confidence

I've found that most jobs just take a certain sense of confidence that you arent going to break it. I understand though that taking a reciprocating saw to an exisiting pipe can be scart

Think of the remaining 200 as tuition paid to the plumber for showing you how to do it yourself the next time. Unless this is the bad job you are talking about.

I think his point is he does not consider using a rubber coupling as a proper repair. Not being a plumber, I don't know if it is acceptable, legal, or anything else.

/rant on

Everyone *****s about what plumbers charge and rightly so, we make too much money. If you wanted it done cheap you would have called a handy man or gone on craigslist. Next time you get hurt don't call the doctor they charge too much also besides who needs a doctor best to get your neighbors kid to fix you up, they can do it at a more affordable price. Hell why ever call a so called 'professional' they all going to over charge you.

But wait so you don't pay for the service you received now that company still has to pay the tech his wages for doing that job, and cover the lost material, gas money etc. I heard one owner of a service company say he has a 15-20% of customers that won't pay there bills, so yes he charges everyone else a little more to cover his loss's.

well to be fair it more than 15 minutes of work. the customer only sees that, but it's much more. I don't think i need to go in to it.
