Sort of new here
Been hanging around the last few months but never formally said Hi.
Since my background occupation is not that common I will briefly explain.
By day I am a sales rep for a national heavy commercial/architectural grade window manufacturer. We make aluminum windows for large projects like schools, universities, hospitals, and high rise buildings. Hurricane resistant windows continues to be a hot topic but since 9/11 a new focus has been on bomb blast resistant windows being installed in govt. buildings.
I started in field service, repairing these windows all over the country. One of the more challenging and interesting part of my work included witnessing/troubleshooting windows undergoing field testing.
Newly installed windows in commercial buildings as well as residential houses where field testing requirements are specified, are subject to air and water infiltration testing.
The water test lasts 15 minutes where the equivalent of 2 inches of rain (8 inches of rain per hour) is sprayed on the window in addition to pressurizing a chamber that gets constructed around the window that simulates up to 70+ mph winds (depending on the performance rating of the window). One drop of water that makes it passed the interior of the window constitutes a failure. Pretty tough test. It's amazing that only a pinhole in a part of the weatherstripping, sealing process, or exterior field applied caulk joint can cause a failure. It was my job to find that pinhole (most of the time hidden from view) and correct it.
Anyway, enough of all that. If anyone has any window repair questions I'll do what I can to point you in the right direction and if anyone is "window shopping" and has a question about performance criteria or ratings, I will try to help.
My hobby of late has been restoring houses. The last one I should have bulldozed and started from scratch but I hung in there and is almost complete.
Next fall I will be breaking ground on my dream house. I can't build a new house on weekends so I will be subbing out the envelope to dry in. I will have some questions for you builders in the future.
