Should Have Learned When I Had The Chance...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Matt. I'm 26 years old and currently residing in Virginia. I have worked all my life with electronics - in an air conditioned space - with tools that have never seen a leaky faucet or cut through lumber.

All my life my Dad always took care of the carpentry - plumbing - electrical - automotive - darn near anything that could be fixed/built. He was great at everything. 6 years ago this August I lost him to cancer. I never took the chance to learn all I could from him. To me it was boring useless knowledge... you're supposed to hire people for that stuff, right? I've grown up since.

These days I'm home taking care of my Mom and the house needs some serious work. Aside from little means to pay the specialists, she's had some really horrific experience with local handymen. So here I am, trying to pick up where my Dad left off.

I do the best I can but I was always taught to do it right the first time... so here I am looking for some wisdom/direction on jobs as they come to the fore. Looking forward to interacting with you folks in the future. Thank you for any expertise you see fit to throw my way.

Sorry about your Dad. There are tons of great folks here who will pass on their knowledge for him.

Welcome. Ask lots of specific questions. Pics are worth 1000 words. And sorry it's the hottest summer ever that you're getting started.

Thanks Leah! It truly seems like I stumbled upon a gem when I found this place. Thanks for your kind words. I've already been overwhelmed by the kindness and open exchange of knowledge here and its only been a few days. I wish my workplace was this friendly and inviting.
