Novice DIYer

Greetings all-

My name is Mike Touset from Northern Virginia and I've been a DIY person seems like forever. While I don'w have expertise in any of the areas of a house infrastructure, i.e., plumbing, carpentry, building, electricity, etc... I make evevy effort to tackle those tasks, usually with the help of the internet, books, videos or coaching from someone with subject matter expertise. I wish I had found this site much sooner. I look forward to tapping into this new found resourse and impart whatever knowledge I do have. I work for the Government in HR. I'm also very good with computers, while that's not my field of endevor. Well, I end this intro by stating again that I look forward to more DIY learning. Regards, Mike T.

I appreciate the warm welcome. I'm preparing to takle a free standing wooden deck for the back of my house. When I purchase the designder software "Deck Designer", it's providing way too much infomation for my simple mind to process. For instance, it gives me a post layout view, but provides footage information that I don't think I need and which I can't understand them anyway. I want to do it free standing so I don't have to cut into my siding to put in a ledger board, but I still intend to butt up the decking to the back of the house. I think I'm going to simply pay attention to where I need to set the posts and progress from that point. My plan is for a lower level deck, 18" high, 16' wide, and 22' long with no railings and a 1-step skirt, 4 planters attached to wooden benches along the sides and the front. I believe that when I can determine the placing of the posts (10-13 posts), I will actually make progress in placing the beams and joists. I really don't know if I'm asking for help or confirmation of my thoughts to build my confidence, or maybe just other thoughts.
