I don't know where this question belongs so I'll ask it at the same time I introduce myself.
I'm a homeowner that hasn't done a lot of work around the house. Usually I get stumped by the simple things, like now.
I need to run a cat-5 (home network) cable through the floor. I've measured carefully enough but the space between the floor upstairs and the ceiling downstairs seems really large. Is there some secret to passing the cable through both holes? I stick it through the one upstairs but the odds of it coming out the hole downstairs and pretty much nil. What sort of trick or gizmo should I use to pass the cable through without making a huge hole?
They make long drill bits (16"), which you can drill through both the floor and ceiling, remove the bit while its still in the hole, attach the cable to the bit and pull the bit and cable through the hole at the same time.
I've done it this way before, pretty simple operation.
Or you can use a electrical fish tape and a flashlight shining light "up" through the hole and feed the tape through and attach the cat and pull, but just getting a long bit is much simpler.
