Newbie from Portland OR

I'm a first time home owner as of February this year, just starting to get my head round how much stuff I want to change in our new place... thank God for forums like this one, I am no DIY expert!

Ours is a 1940s house, mostly in great shape- it was empty for over a decade until the contractor we bought it from fixed it up top to bottom. Trouble is, his taste and ours are pretty different, and he definitely cut a few corners here & there... so, I'm hoping some of you seasoned DIY folks will be able to throw a few suggestions my way. I'm all ears, and very thankful in advance for any tips or inspiration.
