Newbee with 175-Year-Old House
My wife and I bought the house of her dreams a few years ago. It is a historic home in Southwest Michigan on the St. Joseph River. It was owned by her grandparents for about 40 years (1960-1999) and left the family in 2004.
To make a long story short, it was sorely neglected for five, maybe 10 years. It didn't take long to realize that we were the first family to live there year 'round for at least 50 years, maybe significantly longer. Let's just say there is lots of work to be done. My home-office, as well as the chicken coup and storage, is in the barn, which needs a roof. That will likely be done this summer by yours truly.
By the way, My name is Michael and I am 54. By vocation for the last 25 years or so, I have been sitting behind a computer. My main assistants will be my wife and our 12-year-old son.
After replacing the barn roof, we will remodel two bathrooms and enclose a patio. Since the new roof on the house has leaked since Day 1, we/I may replace it next year, if the barn roof isn't too much of a hassle. And then there is the dock on the river, which needs new pilings. Then there is the hot tub to go onto a yet-to-be-created concrete slab. There is more to be done, but this listing is a start...
I will be seeking direction for most of the projects. Thank you for your awesome website and guidance to us DIY'rs.
