newbe here, on solar panels
 
Hi everyone, I'm a DIY solar panel maker. Well., I have only one for now but there are more to come. I'm from Wyoming the windy high country.
I was looking for some one to talk to about the DIY home made solar panels.:)

The size is 21&1/2 x 45&3/4 thats the outer dim.
there are 36 cells in series. I tested each one be fore I put them together and one was 7.85 and the other was 7.9 but thats early in the morning.
i can't understand when I tie them together the voltage stays around 7.6 .
when I'm suppose to get 18 or 19 volts
the cells were 3x6 evergreens.
I want to try one with out wood.

You should get ~70w in bright sunlight.

36 ea. 0.8v cells in series should give you ~29v.

You have a link to your cell manuf. & cell model?

This is one that i use more offten but there is alot on ebay.
3x6 cells .55V 3.6 amps 1.98watts

Solar Insolation is 5.0 - 5.4

You should get at least ~20v out of this array with no load on it, and with a 5.6 Ω 150w load resistor you should get ~72w.

The insolation value will give you the w-h per day.

Maybe some of the cells are shorted or open. Test them individually for open circuit voltage.

Thank you, I'll have to go back and test them. Today I have just received 50 4x4" solar cells. I'm going to out them in rolls of 10 and make a solar panel. I have some cells that are 1"x21/2" and I really don't do much of anything with them. This is one of my dumb mistakes I made when I ordered them.

With the voltmeter common lead at one end of the panels, in bright sunlight, with all panels in series, your reading should increase by ~0.5v for each panel that you probe.
With this many cells I'd start at the midpoint and look for your ~10v. If it's not there, look in the bottom half. Otherwise look in the top half. The quickest way to find the problem in an arrangement like this is to keep halving the number of cells monitored [binary search/binary chop routine].
