New member planning retirement home

Hello everyone. I've been thinking about building my retirement home for quite a while and taking the owner-builder route. I've still got several years before breaking ground, but I'm learning as much as I can about the process in the meantime. This site is helping with my education!

I purchased a lot in Georgia a while back, but we have had a change of heart and we are now looking at land in Virginia.

So do you have some questions?
Ever designed and built a home before?
Concider things like;
Single story
Ramp as well as stairs. to get in the home.
All 36" wide doors.
Roll in shower.
Bathroom built to ADA standards.
Levers instead for door knobs and faucet handles.

I've seen where many times someone retires and goes down hill and has to move out of the house because it would cost to much to retro fit it to meet there changing needs.
