Hi everyone. Nice to find this site, only wish I had found it earlier.
I'm retired, age 60, and building a new home for the wife and I.
2100 sq. ft. ranch plus a walkout basement.
We started actual construction in June of 2008 with the felling of trees and excavating the job site. I used pros to do the basement and flatwork.
My neighbor helped me start the framing by by laying out the green treated plates. I set the joists and rim boards and he returned to help me lay the subfloor. Together we built a few exterior walls. I then took over from there and did the remainder of the exterior and all of the interior wall framing. I then hired a crew to set the trusses and and apply the roof sheathing. I followed up by putting on the tar paper and shingles, soffitt and facia and hung my own gutters, doors and windows. I've done all the wiring to date and roughed in all the soil and vent pipes.
Currently, I'm nearing the end of hanging drywall in the structure.
We just got the furnace turned on today, but I have been heating
the house with a torpedo heater. Anyway, that's where I'm at. It's been real and it's been fun, but I can't say it's been real fun.
I have lots of questions and, for starters, if you look around you'll probably see me make my appearance on the drywall tread of this forum site.
Cheers!
Ron Franck

Welcome to the DIY Chatroom.
Thanks, one thing that would make this retirement business better would be to be retired in New England. I love sailing vessels and kayaking and I can quite imagine New England has the best of both.
