My first post
I started out having to help my father fix things around the house. It was more out of necessity than hobby. We did not have much money and just couldn't afford to hire anyone.
I remember having to stay home from school when I was in grade 5 because the water pipe had burst under the kitchen sink and my father needed help.
He was a welder and later on when I was old enough I apprenticed as an electrician. It was a rewarding job but the construction industry took a down turn when I was third term and I had to find other means to get by. After bartending for a while I went back to school and went to university and now work on computer networks for a living.
I now have the thought of "why should I hire anyone because I know I can do it myself". Now with my own house, my parent's house and my Mother-In-Law's house to work on I get all the practice I need!
I'm currently on the third year of trying to finish my own basement and tend to look things up periodically to make sure I'm doing it right.
One think I learned, following Mike Holmes advice to the letter gets pricey real fast!
I hope to see you guys around and maybe I can help some while I get advice from others.
Here is my first tip:
If you can come up with a way to make the house look better your wife will authorize the purchase of the required tools. Remember crown moulding equals a new 12" sliding mitre saw.
Your friend in projects,
welcome...yes and a new kitchen= great wood shop....
