Lots of decorating experience, not so much of the repair experience

I'm excited to join this forum--I love home repair and improvement, but I don't have a lot of experience doing the work. I have tons of design and decorating work in my background, but the fixing things elements of home ownership have always been someone else's issue. (We recently bought our first home, and we're thrilled--it's 40+ years old and looks great. It was a one-owner home, and she kept meticulous records about everything.)

We love the hardwoods--and work hard to keep them as pristine as the original owner did. And we love the sun room. Not so thrilled about the deck refinishing we have to complete this year, or the fireplace repairs we have to make. But we're figuring things out as we go along.

And somethings we're figuring out after we screw them up. Oh, well. It is what it is, right?

Welcome. Take your time when you can but work away at your triage list of things that have to be done too and expect surprises. I find this site extremely valuable for dealing with things that come up unexpectedly with lots of creative and doable solutions. Stay open to suggestions and don't close down to quickly. In addition to asking for advice when we need it, some of us do or did work in the trades and may have some knowledge to pass along that is worthwhile. Implementing suggestions is always up to you of course.
