Hi all, I just joined

I was hoping someone out there could tell me how to protect a wood carving, that is in our front yard. It is "Smokey the Bear" and I have painted it with oilbased paint,as instructed by the carver, but what about the hat portion. It is weathered and looks the color of barnwood. Can I stain it? Can I polyeurethane the whole thing after being painted?
Any advice would be welcome !!
Thanks to all
