I have been a carpenter for 35 years. That being said' I've spent most of the last 30 years in the office estimating concrete work.
Now I am planning on finishing my basement and need a refresher course.

Welcome. I'm in the same boat of just getting started finishing my basement. Some basic geographic information is helpful for those giving advice to you. I used Google Sketchup extensively in planning/designing my basement. I cannot say enough praise about that free program for this sort of thing. Good luck, there's plenty to see/read and plenty of useful people on this site.
