Confusion and Fear in NH

Hi all - have spent months reading the postings and finally joined. we own an 1820-renovated 1880-altered 1940 - patched up old B&B and motel. deferred maintenance was the polite phrase to describe the old Inn. Right now I'm terrified about trying to upgrade inslulation -- I'll be asking lots of questions

Confusion and Fear in NH

What's there to be afraid of?
Look into getting an energy audit before doing anything.
Not sure if PSNH does them but some countys, and states have some sort of program.

Confusion and Fear in NH

thanks for the support!!! fear comes from starting any project on our property - never sure what we'll find. started an energy audit last year and it didn't go well, working on insulation now which is the confusion - - batts / blown in / spray foam or a magic mixture of it all. working on forming my first question now

Confusion and Fear in NH

I'm orginaly from the Hillsboro NH area, so I know how cold it can get up there.
There's a few low cost things you could do yourself if your able.
Air sealing the attic, adding blown in insulation to the attic are messy jobs but are simple enough to do.
Any insulation under the house?
Had the old windows replaced yet?

Most of your heat loss is through the windows and doors.

A fellow NH'er here as well!

Joe is right, PSNH will do an energy audit (unless like me, you have someone other than PSNH).

Ask away with questions, lots of good stuff here!

Confusion and Fear in NH

I hear you guys got lucky this year with the weather.
It's been the warmest year on record around here to.
We've been sitting outside and riding the golf cart for the last 3 months.
Last year we had 8" of snow that last for over a week. No big deal to you guys but around here there's not many snow plows excect to plow the main roads.
Almost no one even owns a snow shovel, and no snow tires.
You take your life in your own hands when trying to drive because no one knows how to drive in snow.
