Checking in from Kansas
I'm 29 years old and bought my first house a couple years ago as a bank repo, knowing nothing about houses (stupidly). I came to find out they did not flash the windows when the house was built in the 80s so I had hidden water damage around most of the windows.
So I have had a baptism by fire on this DIY stuff and learned a lot in the last 2 years and built a good collection of tools. It's actually easier than I imagined. So far I have done:
Replaced faucets, toilets, quarter valves, receptacles, light fittings and switches.
Replaced rotted studs under windows and rotted exterior trim.
Lots of drywall repairs.
Replaced some baseboards and window casings.
Lots of wallpaper removal, skim coating and painting.
This summer I want to do the massive job of replacing the sheathing, siding, trim, windows, doors and the poorly built deck. Everything ties together in terms of flashing so I figured it would be best to do it all at once and get it over with. I plan to use Huber Zip sheathing, Hardieplank siding and Azek trim. Windows and doors I haven't researched yet.
I figure if I can do the work myself I will come out even on what I paid for the house, and have a good knowledge base and toolkit .
So I will be asking a few questions and I'll try to chip in with any help I can offer.
