black around edges of white carpet

Hello I purchased my home in 2001. It was built in 54. More than half of the house has been remodeled or upgraded in the late eighties. I have white carpet throughout the living room, hall and bedrooms which was installed in the late eighties as well. Overall, the carpet is in pretty good condition as it is of very good quality.l The problem that i've noticed is black all around the edges..inside one of the hall closets it smells damp but does not feel damp. i have used baking soda, dry rid and other similar products. what is the black and how do i get rid of the damp smell?

Well first thing you need to determine if there IS moisture. Just because you cant feel it doesnt mean its not there. Grab a moisture meter from HD (the pin type) and stick it into the carpets and subfloor and see what you find.

When was the last time you had your carpets cleaned? Did they concentrate on the edges and corners or just do the "field"? Many times dirt builds up there and doesn't get cleaned.
