You really don't want to get into that. I have a forum. And if anyone is interested, this VB software is several years old and can be bought for $50. And maintenance is almost not necessary. I use the same software and it's rare to have a problem.

Respectfully, I never mentioned software at all. The server, hosting, and bandwidth needed for this size of a site (and the traffic) is extensive. Things do happen in busy forums that need our IT staff to fix. There are a lot more costs involved in running an active community than most people realize.

Advertisements is how sites keep running. Take a look at social media sites. I don't complain about the ads on Facebook for one reason. I enjoy being able to interact with friends, family, and those with an interest in photography. I like that it is free. Even your local news broadcast online depends on advertising.

Obviously the company needs to make a profit or they wouldn't be providing the community for free.

Just my 2 cents...

One improvement I would like to see is a database of some sort for step by step guides (or maybe even plans) on how to do common things.

A tutorial section might be nice...

That would be nice. We tried to get members to do it, but finally had to hire someone.

This place had a lot of that at one time, what happened to it?

I had posted about 15 "How-To's" related to installing ceramic tile based on the professional seminars that I do from time to time around the Midwest. And then O-Mike pissed me off flexing his muscles and banned me for something stupid so all of my tutorials mysteriously went away. Not everyone has the ability and forethought to realize the real cost of their shoot-from-the-hip-actions.

I thought this was what you are talking about: http://www.diychatroom.com/f98/

If not, could you give a little detail.

That is awesome.

You would think by now I would be better at using the search function.

I wonder if it could be organized a bit to help people quickly find certain topics within it.

I'd like to see the search function improved, as it is now its all but worthless.

I just searched "ceiling fan" and this is what I got. Notice how it rejected the word "fan" for being to long, short or to common.

I agree, if it were indexed where a subject could be found easily, that would be nice. Maybe have a list of subjects with really good write ups with illustrations. For example how to build a house with each function subtitled. Man, that would take a lot of work, but doable. LOL

I remember vaguely giving someone a step by step of installing carpet a couple years ago, but would have no idea how to find it.

There are many really talented professionals here, it would be super if great articles like Rusty wrote could be indexed.

We send people to Google all the time to search this site and with good reason...Shouldn't have to though.
