as cheap as flash memory is these days, there's no reason to set your camera at anything lower than it's maximum resolution.... I mean that's why we buy these hi tech new cameras, for the high resolution.
You can always go back later and upload it and reduce the size for web use, but you'll still have a high res copy in case you ever want to crop/print it in the future. If you shoot at low quality, you can never go back...
I find that a 500 pixel wide photo is more than enough detail.
JPG compression makes for a nice small photo.
