Question

Sears Drill Press makes flash

I recently bought an older Sears 3/4 hp drill press. Sometimes when you turn it on the motor makes a small flash inside the motor right under the wireing plate.

After matching this several time I found out this was coming from the "centrifugal start switch". I took apart the motor and removed a hornets nest - -sanded the contacts- - -and reassembled the motor. The thing still makes the flash. However, it runs great. Where can I buy a new switch? Can the old switch be fixed? Is it OK to run the motor like it is? I appreciate any help.

i wouldn't worry about that. that is the start run plate. You mite go to a motor shop. I belive they may have a paste that can go on the contat's to cut down the ark. When you sand down the contact's that is not good. their is a coating that should be on them. Sanding now they are contacting like metal to metal . I belive the contact's are silver coated. Now that is gone so the flash is what you will get now. I would take the motor model number down to the repair shop they should be able to get a new one for you ??

Sears Drill Press makes flash

Try sears.com/parts. They may carry parts for your drill press if it's not too terribly old....
