Recommendations: Compressor capable of spraying paint

I have a 3 gallon portable Craftsman compressor that has done/does a great job for firing trim nailers/staplers, filling tires and pool toys, etc. However, I am getting into doing some autobody work, and other projects in the garage that need paint/finishes sprayed. The wagner is just not cutting it. It works ok for some things, but I want something real.

My question is, what kind of requirements should I start to look for in a compressor? I know a big tank is always good, but I also park my cars in this garage, so a smaller footprint is good too. I'm also just a hobbiest, not a pro, so I don't need to spend top dollar here. Let me know what you guys recommend or at least what you think the bare minimums are so that I can start shopping around. Thanks in advance.

Likely should be looking at which gun you want to use. Then you can find out what kind of compressor IT wants. An alternative would be to start shopping turbine HVLP systems. You will likely find a decent one in the same price range as a compressor to run a standard gun. It will also just store under a bench. Here's one that would likely do the job.
