New PC Grinder, now old PC Grinder

Yesterday I received a manufacturer-refurbished Porter Cable PC750AG grinder. Nothing super, just a standard 7.5a 4.5" grinder. This was replacing my Harbor Freight grinder that died after 1 year of very seldom use. I decided to try it out today while on my lunchbreak. I put on a wire wheel and started cleaning off some slightly tarnished metal.

About 2 minutes of use, and I smelled something. I thought it was probably just some rust getting kicked up. Then the motor slowed down, so I turned it off. Then, I saw the smoke. My new tool was on fire! I set it on the garage floor and watched it smolder for a minute before burning itself out - smelled horrible.

I've always had good luck with manufacturer refurbs before, this was the first one to ever fail on me. Luckily it failed pretty-much right out of the box and I still had all the paperwork. It has a 1-year warranty on it, and I already got an RMA to send it back. Unfortunately, they don't have a replacement in stock to send me, but they are expecting some at the end of the month.

I've had a bad run of luck in the last 8 days:

  • Table Saw died
  • Airbag system on my truck is acting up
  • On my way to the dealer to fix the airbag system, I got a stone kicked-up on the highway and broke my windshield.
  • Now the Grinder

Don't know if youtube embedding is enabled, but here it is still smoldering a few minutes later.
