I'd suggest the Porter Cable 893 2-1/4hp kit. It is a tried and true router, and if you get the kit you get the plunge base and the fixed base. The plunge feature is very handy. I got mine on sale at Lowes for less than $190 (kit), but they usually run more. I have four Porter Cable routers, but this is my general purpose router that goes to jobs with me. The soft start feature is awesome too. You also MUST get a variable speed router, which this is.
As for making mouldings...Hmmm. Some can be made with a handheld router, but you're limited. A router table is necessary for making many profiles. Handheld routers are great for edge profiles, profile trimming and cutting, and plunge cuts. Once you have one and have invested in some bits, you'll find a lot of uses.
