Looking for 1st. router

I am looking to buy my 1st. router and could use some help figuring what to buy. Price range $0-$300. This router will get light use. Also... I am wood challenged.

The Porter Cable 690 is available at a steep discount and sometimes comes bundled with a 1/4 sheet PC pad sander. Although it's not variable speed, it's a proven workhorse and a great way to get started. There are plenty of accessories for it and everything has been built around or made to accomodate the PC 690 over the years. The smaller, lighter and less powerful Bosch Colt Palm Router is also a very good buy, especially if you're using smaller bits that require less horsepower. At $129, it has variable speed and comes with an edge guide. I have both routers, use them a lot and they're terrific but each is great only within their own respective category.

When you think routers....the standard is the Porter Cable 690. It comes in several configurations...... standard (one spd), D-Handle (one spd), and a variable spd model. all are under say -->> $160.00.
Lite use.....you don't need variable speed for most common sized bits .... then I'd opt for the D-handle .... really easy to handle....
Amazon has some nice prices on this right now....and free shipping...

Without question - Porter Cable. My first was Dewalt-wannabe Harbor Freight 2.25 HP model. It was good and cheap...and then the good wore off about the 3rd time I turned it on. Got The Porter Cable 693 in a kit with a plunge base and one of their tough molded cases for $160 on eBay. They go for cheaper, but I really needed to finish a project!. This baby still runs smooth after a couple years, and some would probably say I abuse her.
