Delta Compound Miter Saw Noise

I have been using my 10" Delta Compound Miter Saw for over ten years without any problem.

Today I was cutting a piece of 2x2 and need to shave 3/8" off the end. As soon as the cut was done I felt a little "thump" sound and the saw made a high pitch noise as I let go of the switch.

I could NOT find the small 2x2 piece that was cut off anywhere. I started to wonder if it might have been sucked into the saw and jammed inside. Tilting the saw to the side after unplugging the power cord, looking in via a flash light I didn't see anything.

When I put the saw back down level and plugged it in and turned the switch on, it was cutting air but had this noise that is slightly louder than normal. But when I let go of the switch and the blade slowed down I heard again a high pitch noise as if something was impeding the rotation of the blade.

I then unplugged the cord again, and disassembled the 10" blade from the saw. I then looked and found nothing that could have caused this. Of course I did get inside the housing where the motor is.

Any idea what could be happening?

Could the small piece of wood be jammed into the blade causing the blade to mis-align and hence the noise? Will a new blade help?

Or something has gone inside the motor assembly and caused a problem inside?

Without the blade I turned on the switch and let go and I did not hear the high pitch noise, but I don't know if that's normal because I never heard what that supposed to have sounded like.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

It could be the brake hanging up,I have one like yours and it works when it wants too.
