Craftsman Devilbiss Air Compressor cranks SLOWLY but won't run

I have a 13 year old (5/2001) Craftsman Air Compressor that won't run. It walks. It acts like the electric motor is turning VERY SLOWLY. It does this for about 5 seconds then trips the breaker. Tried a shorter extension cord, tried a different circuit. Let it sit overnight.
I already check the cylinder/piston (which I rebuild 5 years ago) and there is no binding, it moves just fine and looks fine.
I already checked the two contacts inside the switch. I sanded them a bit and it didn't help at all.

How do I troubleshoot the electrical side of this? The motor, the switch, the capacitor, etc?

Let's hope it isn't a bad switch. Both Sears and Devilbiss list it for $105. PN AC-0758

"Tried a shorter extension cord, tried a different circuit."

I remember when I bought my devilbiss air compressor years ago, I tried running it on an extension cord and it did the same thing you described. I had to run a line out to the garage (previously had no power) and plug the compressor directly to that line. I read that unless you have a heavy gauge ext. cord (at least a 10 awg if not bigger) they will not run properly and could trip a breaker. If you are using a heavy gauge ext. cord, I 'm not sure what the problem would be besides maybe a bad switch. Good luck.

I've been using this compressor with this heavy gauge extension cord for years. I don't know enough about the internals of the switch and capacitor (or the history of these types of compressors) but I'm leaning towards the capacitor.

I want to thank you for this response. Had same issue and once unplugged from the second extension it turned over.
