Can large drill bits be used with small drill?

Hi fellow diyers,

I am planning to buy an SDS-Plus drill.

1. Skil 2Kg Rotary Hammer 1715 - $65 - 550W, 20mm concrete.
(skil.co.in/tools/rotary-hammers-2kg-rotary-hammer-1715.html)
OR
2. Bosch Rotary Hammer GBH 2-28 DFV - $277 - 820W, 28mm concrete.
(bosch-pt.co.in/in/en/professional/power-tools/c131399/p106744/new-tools/gbh-2-28-dfv.html)

I need to use 1" (26mm wide, 400mm length/deep) SDS-Plus drill bits. Can I use it with the Skil? Will be used to drill masonry (not concrete).

I need to buy a large number of tools, hence I am sacrificing on tools that I will be using infrequently.

So if possible I would like to buy the Skil.

Since they all use the same sds-plus shank, I thought it might be. But I don't have any experience with this.

Could you please enlighten me?

In my opinion these two are about as far apart as it gets. If you want a hammer drill that will last go with the Bosch, if you just need one occasionally the Skil may work for you. If you do use a Bosch then use the Skil you will see the difference right off.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for replying.

Yes, they are very different. Thats because if I am getting the Bosch then I wanted to go for the best possible no holds barred.

But I have serious doubts whether the Bosch will be 4 times better, or atleast 2 times.

The thing that you said - use the Bosch, then the Skil and you will understand. That is the exact thing that was in my mind.Is there that big a difference. Could you kindly elaborate on that? It would help me a lot.

I am also afraid that I might run into situations that because of the Skil I may not be able to get a job done. I currently own an old 10mm chuck Black & Decker and it has frustrated me several times.

Or is the Skil good enough?

So sorry I am rambling....................

I have the bosch have had it for years. use it not only to drill but tile removal, removing thin set, removing brick veneer from a house, you get the point. The thing is well made and when I pick it up I know it will work. Just my opinion but I think of Skil as being a DIY throwaway tool. Meaning not if but when it breaks you just get another one. Plus it's going to take power to drive a 1" bit in masonry.

Can large drill bits be used with small drill?

Ayuh,.... As much as I hate to admit it,...
I've been buyin' Harbor Fright tools for stuff I use occasionally, insteada High Quality stuff, like my Everyday tools,..

I bought a bigger spline drive hammer drill 5 years ago,...
It's still hammerin' holes in concrete, 'n limestone today, just used it earlier this week,..

Last Fall,.. needed to hammer a dozen 3/8- 1/2" holes into limestone,...
The big drill was too big, 'n my Makita cordless, too small,...

Yep, went to the Harbor, bought a cheap SDS drill, 'n hammered the holes out,...
Cheap, 'n if I ever need it again, I got it,...
