B&D 710 Planer - how to take it apart?

Hi Folks

Am new here - and here because I have a problem where I need to replace the power supply cord on the above quite old but serviceable tool.

I have removed all the screws and covers that I can see from from outside, including those for the rear base plate, and those for the motor and drive belt covers, as well as the plastic plug on one side which forms part of the cutting height adjustment mechanism (this lifts/lowers the front part of the metal base plate).

From previous experience (a fair amount) taking apart B&D tools to repair them, I assumed that I could then (with some difficulty!) split the plastic body along the centre seam without doing any damage - but that does not seem to work in this case!

So, are there one or more "hidden" fixings or catches that I have missed, or is there some other trick to getting this little ****** apart?

Any help or guidance would be appreciated!

John Allen

Google 'black and decker 710 planer parts' You can find an exploded diagram that will show if you have missed a screw, a good diagram will also show any catches and where they are.

Thanks for that - I will have a look.

However, I finally found the "hidden screw" - it is well hidden in a deep recess under the motor cover! Once that was out, getting the cable changed was easy; it is so old it even had screw terminals for the wires!

Nevertheless, putting the thing back together was a pain as I could'nt get the brushes held in the retracted position until I discovered that the motor bearing was removable.

Now working fine, and the much longer cable was a real boon (as were the TC-tipped blades I got from B&Q !)
