wood stove removal

Well, I put a new gas fireplace in my basement and decided it was time for the wood stove taht took up a ton of space to go. I have taken out the stove and ripped out the brick surround and am now left with a 8" vent pipe comming through my foundation wall going into my chimney.

How do I close this off? Im assuming I cant just insulate it and drywall over it. Does the chimney need to breathe? or should I just cap off the top insulate the pipe and drywall over?

Thanks in advance

I assume there was noting else connected to that chimney??? If correct, plug it up top and bottom and be done with it. If you don't plug the top, it could become home to all sorts of critters. Or if it was an add on, take it down altogether.

I was thinking about insulating the pipe comming through the foundation and putting some sheet metal over the hole and drywalling over it. The top of the chimney has a cap to prevent animals and rain. Should I plug this? Dosnt the chimney need to breath?
