Wood paneling---best option to brighten it up?

What is the best option for brightening up wood paneling that cannot be removed?

I have heard of people painting over it, but, I have not necessarily liked the results.

Is wallpaper the only other option?

For a 1000 square foot home, would trying to brighten up the walls be very expensive? Is it do-able for under $500? Or is that too low for such a project?

The paneling cannot be removed because it is a rental? It would be great to remove it if it is your own place, I would not worry about what is under it as you can deal with that over time .

When we bought this place the former owner must have run into one heck of a deal because every wall, yes even closet walls and some in an unfinished cellar had the exact same dark compressed fake wood paneling on them. What a relieve to have it all gone, all of it, there was 2-3 times I thought it was gone only to find another partial piece somewhere

You can't really wallpaper over paneling
The lines will show thru
My last house I ripped all the paneling down & sheetrocked
Exterior walls had new insulation installed
Also found out that they used pieces of sheetrock behind the kitchen cabinets & did not seal them
So saved on heating costs too

Paint it. The options are limited.

What about vinyl wallpaper? I heard that there is a vinyl type that is very thick, so lines won't show. is that true?

They sell a backing paper that goes under wallpaper that might do the trick. I can't remember the name offhand.
