I had a new wood front door installed around 12 years ago.I finished it my self with a golden oak stain and a couple coats of Poly now it's started fadeing and I would like to redo it .I know I'll haveta sand it but can I just rough sand and restain and use Spar varnish on it ,or what would you recommend?
If your poly coat is still intact and just dull. You should be able to just use a steel wool to give a new re-coat of poly a bit of bite. Really the surface of the poly is all that should of dulled down. A fine steel wool should not show scratches a sanding may if too coarse unless a ultra fine paper is used, between layers of poly. Make sure you get it good and clean before re coating it also.
If the poly layer is cracking peeling or just seems unsound or you don't want to try to re coat (sometimes may fail but then you back to stripping the door anyway so I don't think any harm done in a attempt to re coat). Then the whole finish would have to be removed down to the wood its self. And you would be starting from scratch. I don't believe that you can use a varnish type product over the poly. You would have to stick with a poly type product.
